· Mifepristone is a progesterone inhibitor to stop pregnancy. It sheds the uterine lining to dislodge pregnancy tissues. Once the endometrial disintegrates, the pregnancy can no longer continue.

· Misoprostol is the second medicine, a prostaglandin, in the abortion process. It widens the cervix and dilates the opening to pass the pregnancy tissues easily. The medicine further causes uterine contractions to remove the conception products from the body.

· If Misoprostol 800mcg does not cause bleeding in 4 to 6 hours, take additional Misoprostol pills (4 at a time, followed by another 4 after four hours, maximum 3 to 4 such doses at the mentioned interval). The pills will facilitate uterine contractions required to expel all the pregnancy tissues.

What is the MTP Kit Plus Extra Miso Dosage?

The MTP Kit and Extra Misoprostol dosage instructions are as follows:

· Swallow Mifepristone 200mg pill orally with water on day 1. Use Misoprostol 4 x 200mcg pills after 24 to 48 hours (either buccally by placing pills in cheek pouches or sublingually by keeping pills under the tongue, and ingesting the remains after 30 minutes).

· Or, you may place 4 x Misoprostol 200mcg pills inside the vagina after you lay down and then rest for half an hour for the medicine to get absorbed in the bloodstream.

· If bleeding after the first Misoprostol dose of 4 x 200mcg pills does not begin in 4 to 6 hours, take another 4 pills from the Extra Miso pack. Reinitiate another dose of 4 pills after four hours if bleeding still does not start in 4 to 6 hours. This way, you may take extra doses (up to 5 doses at an interval of 4 hours, each time 800mcg).

What Are the Common Side Effects?

Here are the expected side effects during medical abortion, and how to manage these symptoms:

· Nausea and vomiting are common. But you can avoid the tendency by taking antiemetic medicine before the Misoprostol dose.

· Uterine contractions result in cramps and abdominal pain. To manage the discomfort, apply a hot water bag or heating pad, take pain-relief meds if needed.

· Headache, tiredness, and dizziness are possible. Thus, do not physically strain yourself and do not make any sudden movements.

· For stomach ache, eat light and stay hydrated drinking enough water and electrolyte drinks. Limit caffeine intake and avoid alcohol. During recovery, have nutritious food.

What Are the Medical Abortion Precautions?

Some of the precautions of MTP Kit + Extra Miso pills are:

· Vaginal intercourse, douching, menstrual cups, and tampons should be avoided until bleeding does not end. Maintain hygiene throughout the process and after.

· Pregnancy is possible when sexually active, so use birth control during intimacy. You can ovulate even before the first period after abortion happens – in 8 to 11 days or after a few weeks.

· Seek medical attention in case of complications such as foul-smelling vaginal discharge, a high fever over 24 hours, severe pain not relieved by pain meds, soaking 2 maxi-sized pads or more every hour and for next 2 hours, extreme weakness or dizziness – close to fainting.

· Avoid interactions such as immunosuppressants, St. John’s wort, phenytoin, dexamethasone, CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole, erythromycin, grapefruit juice, blood thinners, CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, seizure meds, etc.

What Are the MTP Kit + Extra Misoprostol Contraindications?

Do not take abortion pills but seek a substitute in case of:

· Ectopic pregnancy or implantation outside the uterus.

· Pregnancy over 12 weeks in the first trimester.

· Allergy to MTP Kit pills and Misoprostol.

· An artificial heart valve in place.

· Unexplained vaginal bleeding, chronic adrenal failure, bleeding disorders, or undiagnosed adnexal mass.

· Unremoved IUD (intrauterine device) before starting the medical abortion.

· Ongoing long-term corticosteroid therapy or anticoagulating treatment.

· Severe asthma, anemia, or kidney/liver/cardiac disorders.
